Certified Grief Counselor
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Lori Kuhn is a retired Registered Nurse (RN) with 40 years of experience working in the medical field. In addition to being a board certified RN, Lori is a Certified Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist and Certified Grief Counselor. She is currently associated with Ampersand Integrative Wellness Center in Wyomissing, PA. At Ampersand, she holds (in-person) group sessions and offers one-on-one sessions virtually to anyone, anywhere who wants to engage in the Grief Recovery Method. Lori works with people who have experienced any loss, but especially loss of a child, spouse or loved one, or due to substance use disorder and overdose.
The last 27 years of Lori’s career was spent working in a Family Practice Residency. Here, she learned a lot about the crucial role mental health and wellness play in our lives and how, unfortunately, it is not always addressed appropriately due to time constraints and administrative demands. While constantly witnessing how loss plays a role in our disease processes, Lori experienced her own losses, walking on the road many of her patients were walking too.
On Feb 27, 2014, Lori lost her daughter to a multi-drug overdose. Nine months after she passed, Lori’s husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. While still in the midst of grieving their daughter, she and her husband fought his battle with cancer. In January of 2018, her husband unfortunately lost that battle, when he too passed away.
The response that Lori experienced after returning to work after her losses was very different after each death. Upon the loss of her daughter, the support was overwhelming and generous. Upon the loss of her husband just four years later, it was very different and she felt somewhat alienated. The differing responses were confusing and hurtful at times making going to work very challenging. After 40 years of service, she decided to retire to focus on her own well-being and supporting others who are traveling their own grief journeys.
In becoming a Certified Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist, Lori has had the opportunity and the appropriate tools to help herself heal and help other grievers to heal themselves and mend their broken hearts while finding completion with their losses.
